When do your skis need servicing? Bases, edges and glide

Skis can need attention before obvious damage appears. The base, edges and changes in how they glide can help you decide when to take them to a workshop.

You do not have to wait for a major repair. An assessment helps establish what the equipment needs and avoid unnecessary work.

The base: look for damage

After skiing, inspect the base when your equipment is clean and dry. Scratches and impacts vary in severity. A deep gouge or damage beside an edge deserves a workshop assessment before further use.

At Riosport we repair base damage and carry out base grinding where appropriate. Base grinding and waxing are different operations: the former addresses the base surface, while wax forms part of glide maintenance.

Edges: impacts, rust and wear

A visible impact, damaged area or corrosion is a reason to seek advice. Do not test sharpness by running your fingers along an edge. If grip feels different, describe when this happens. Equipment condition is only one factor, alongside snow conditions and skiing technique.

We prepare edges at different angles according to the appropriate setup for the equipment and skier.

Glide and waxing

If your skis seem slower than before, mention it to the workshop. Snow and temperature can also change this feeling; it does not automatically mean a full repair is needed. At Riosport we offer hot waxing and assess base and edge work where necessary.

MONTANA Crystal Rock, GRIPtech and radial tuning

Our workshop uses MONTANA Crystal Rock with GRIPtech for side-edge preparation. We also offer radial tuning: we vary the base edge angle along the ski to help it turn smoothly while maintaining grip underfoot.

Preparation combines machinery with technical judgement. A basic full service and race preparation serve different needs; the choice depends on equipment condition and intended use.

How often should skis go to the workshop?

There is no single interval for everyone. Explain how you have used your skis, the snow conditions encountered and any changes you have noticed. You can ask for an assessment before the season, after an impact or when you see wear.

Bring your skis to Riosport for an assessment of their condition and preparation needs. Visit our Workshop page to explore the available services.
